How's everyone holding up here? I hope you are all well. In this time of the Covid-19 quarantine, some people are suggesting some activities to do at home, some having rest, some still work.
Whatever you guys doing during this uncertain time, I just want to say "We're in this together, you are not alone. Do things that comfort you, don't make yourself in any pressure. But remember to be safe and think about each other."
My update: I am doing well here, still (thank God) working from home and do lots of cooking/baking.
And now I present to you my latest collaboration with Amel Leo, the one and only photographer whose works I adore so much! You might want to check my other collaboration with her!
This time we are doing a Virtual Photography Challenge! Amel is in Jakarta and I am in Vancouver with 14 hours time differences, we met via ZOOM video call and explore ways to still be creative!
Her idea was to use a glass full of water to create some "fine-art" looking portrait. It was so fun!
Please kindly check the video to see my quick makeup tutorial and behind the scenes for this Zoom Virtual Photoshoot :p
Warning: A lot of my pictures below :p
HOW TO DO VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY LIKE A PRO:
- Prepare your gadget with a full battery and a good connection.
- Find a spot at home that has a good amount of clean space and sunlight.
- Wear something bright for the easier shoot.
- Explore some transparent material to boost the artsy touch even with the simplest setting.
- Play with every angle, even better - pick your favorite! And you don't always need a tripod!
I put the tips and tricks on How To Do Virtual Photography elaboration down there (Based on Amel's insights and our experience).
1. Prepare your gadget with a full battery and a good connection.
Because we are depending on gadgets, make sure you have everything charged before the photoshoot. I had my iPhone on 30% and it dropped so quickly, don't repeat my mistake. You will find it's way easier to control the angle with your phone.
We tried a couple of apps such as Whatsapp video call, Facebook messenger, and we agreed that Zoom probably the best provider to do this. It's possible to shoot with ZOOM on your computer, but the phone is mobile and you can direct it anywhere you'd love to.
Not to forget good internet is a must #duh, sorry but I gotta remind you :)

2. Find a spot at home that has a good amount of clean space and sunlight.
You can do the virtual photoshoot with ring light or softbox or whatsoever lighting tools you have but I guarantee you, "less is more" is the best. WHY? Because it's easier to (again) control your angle! Since the workplace is limited for the photographer, the model has to be very flexible to consistently change the angle. Remember: in this virtual photoshoot, your photographer CANNOT move. And sunlight will help you the best, it gives you a sharper image with less noise!
3. Wear something bright for easier light control.
As you can see from the pictures, I have some shots with black colors. Please watch our behind the scene of the virtual photoshoot on my Youtube:
You can tell it's so freaking hard to catch a great amount of light for my face with darker clothes. WHY? Because even tho the windows and white walls biased the light, still my phone camera tried so hard to balance the lights that shine on me. And when I changed into white clothes, it's much easier to control the light.

4. Explore some transparent material to boost the artsy touch even with the simplest setting.
Amel played with some tools like metallic paper, Christmas warm lights, on the other sides I also played with a glass of water. These supportive materials will give the pictures some artsy touch that helps us a lot! Because remember, the photographer can't move so we need to play more with accessories. Also, play with the depth of field that those things created, try to place them as close as possible to the lens to create a stunning flare, and so on.
5. Play with every angle, even better - pick your favorite! And you don't always need a tripod!
I love this ZOOM virtual photoshoot because I am able to choose my own angle lol! The photographer is stuck with only 1 view but as we manage the phone camera, we can see directly what kind of angle, expression, proportion, and everything that we'd like to see in the result - this is a privilege, guys! Believe me, it's easier to use no tripod and just place the phone anywhere, as long as it can sit properly, we are good to go. Unless you need to make a full-body shoot but I suggest with this virtual photography, close-up shoots are the best to take :)
So which one are you favorite? I love them ALL that's why I post all of them lol.
